On October 24 and 25, 2018, we were privileged to receive the visit from two groups of high school students: students from „Tehno-Art“ High School for Technologies and Crafts and students from High School Student Dorms Association of Belgrade.
Through the story about the history of the New Cemetery in Belgrade, since its beginnings to the present day, the students were also introduced to the burial culture and by extension the importance of establishing the first architecturally planned cemetery in Serbia, thus shading a new light to this location as one of the topoi in collective memory.
Strolling through the cemetery Allies, the students got acquainted with the architecture of the New Cemetery in Belgrade, including headstones they viewed as the works of art, in addition to the sculptural works that attracted their attention. In a view of the fact that the upcoming commemoration of the WWI Armistice Centenary is close to their history curriculum, the focus was on the theme.
The groups visited final resting places of Field Marshal Živojin Mišić, Field Marshal Radomir Putnik, statesman Nikola Pašić, WWI Heroine Milunka Savić, socialist Dimitrije Tucović and WWI general, Minister of Army and Navy and author of the rank “Field Marshal” Miloš Vasić.
Special attention was paid to the „Heroes of the Quill“, i.e. authors Petar Kočić, Branislav Nušić and Vladeta Jerotić psychotherapies and author.
The stroll did not bypass the Serbian benefactors and philanthropists: Ilija Milosavljević Kolarc, Milan Kujundžić – Aberdar and Velimir Mihailo Teodorović, in addition to the last resting place of the Russian Imperial Diplomat, who is believed to be the “first victim” of the WWI, Nicolas Genrikovitch Hartwig.
Through the Alley of Meritorious citizens, where the scenes from the movies starring Milena Dravić, Dragan Nikolić, Bata Živojinović, Nebojša Glogovac were talked about, we ended the stroll visiting the Ossuary of Belgrade Defenders (1914-1918).
The idea of visiting the crypt, which commenced with some degree of fear, ended in exuberance and the wish to find out more and extend the walk.
We will give them this opportunity again, in the course of one of their following visits.
The students transformed their impressions into the inspiring texts and drawings you may see in the gallery at our web site.
